USA Weightlifting Responds to the Departure of Achilleas Tsogas as IWF CEO
USA Weightlifting President and CEO Matt Sicchio issued the following statement in response to news that International Weightlifting Federation CEO Achilleas Tsogas is departing the organization.
USA Weightlifting offers our sincere thank you to Mr. Tsogas for his service to the IWF and the sport of weightlifting. He contributed importantly to the professionalism of the IWF’s operations, with a critical focus on good governance and clean sport. While we are disappointed by his departure, we wish him well in what comes next.
USA Weightlifting looks forward to working with the IWF and our fellow member federations to identify a qualified replacement for this critical CEO role. The IWF must maintain momentum in transparency, clean sport, and professional management through this transition.
The creation of a CEO position – introduced in 2021 through critical reforms in the IWF Constitution – and its staffing with an experienced sports executive like Mr. Tsogas demonstrated the IWF’s commitment to professional management of our sport.
As a member federation, USA Weightlifting supports the hiring of a CEO with demonstrated experience delivering transparent governance, clean sport, and professional business administration. These are essential qualities for the leadership of our sport in the approach to LA28 and beyond.
