Remembering Brandon Penny

by USA Weightlifting

With great sadness and broken hearts, USA Weightlifting announces the death of USA Weightlifting Director of Communications & Content Brandon Penny.

Though Brandon started his position with USA Weightlifting in 2020, he has been a longtime supporter of the sport through his previous work with the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC). Brandon quickly established himself as a valued team member and friend to his colleagues and the athletes whose stories he loved to tell. Two of his first assignments were covering Team USA weightlifters at the 2019 IWF Youth World Championships in Las Vegas and 2019 IWF World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand. Between these two events, Brandon spent several weeks with our athletes and Team USA staff, capturing the journey and human stories of our team.

Brandon’s passion, dedication, and commitment to the Olympic & Paralympic movement and the athletes he worked with were evident in everything he did. He went above and beyond to ensure every release, every story, and every interview he conducted was of the highest quality and always focused on the athlete first. Never liking to be in the spotlight himself, Brandon was a true force behind the scenes, working tirelessly to make sure every athlete was given a platform to tell their unique story.

Before his time with USA Weightlifting, Brandon was a well-respected and well-known communications professional in the world of Olympic & Paralympic Sports. He started his career in the Olympic & Paralympic movement as an Intern for the USOPC in 2010. Shortly after completing his internship, he was hired by the USOPC as the Manager of Content Development and Digital Media from 2012-2018 and then as a Managing Editor. Brandon attended multiple Summer & Winter Olympic Games being responsible for the USOPC's digital media presence and acting as a Press Officer for several sports.

The weightlifting community will greatly miss Brandon. We are thankful for his contributions and grateful for the time we had with him. We will continue to uphold the standards of excellence Brandon set for USA Weightlifting, particularly as we try to tell compelling athlete stories without his voice.

We extend our deepest condolences to Brandon’s family and loved ones and ask that their privacy be respected during this time of grieving.
