61 Medals Earned at Pan American Youth Championships, Women Win U17 Title
SAN LUIS POTOSI, MEXICO— The United States earned 61 individual medals and four team trophies at last week’s Pan American Youth Championships in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Through six days of competition, U.S. lifters earned 18 gold medals, 21 silver medals, and 22 bronze medals. Gianna Van Hofwegen was the lone total gold medalist out of both U15 teams, while Elle Bays, Madeline Francescone, Madden Mones, Carter Sing and Sebastian Stodel all earned total-gold at the U17 level. The United States’ highest-ranked lifters based on Robi Points were Sing (second overall, U17), Francescone (fifth overall, U17), Andrew Weymer (third overall, U15), and Chassity Del Balso (third overall, U15). The teams’ performances brought the U.S. total medal count to 119 across all international competitions in 2025, and the 61 earned medals are the most earned at a single event dating back to 2017.
Eleven national records fell during competition as well:
· Chassity Del Balso set 63 kg U15 clean & jerk and total records with her 104 kg CJ and 180 kg total
· Gianna Van Hofwegen broke the 69 kg U15 snatch record with her 82 kg lift
· Diego Yoo set a 56 kg U17 snatch record with his 87 kg lift. He now owns all of the 56 kg U17 national records (87/112/198)
· Sebastian Stodel’s 135 kg C&J is a new 65 kg U17 national record
· Carter Sing swept the 79 kg U17 records when his 131/164/295 performance
· Roy Maher also rewrote the record books (88 kg U17) with his 120/160/280 performance
Referencing USAW’s A/B standards, many athletes either reached their respective age/weight category’s “A” standard or came within arms reach of it. Bays, Del Balso, Francescone, Kaia Jacobs, Addie Jones, Kinsley Rodden, and Sing all hit 100% or better of the “A” standard, while 13 athletes recorded a total that was between 90 and 100 percent of the “A” standard. The performances shook up the National Team Program rankings heading into the final national event of the year – the Virus Weightlifting Finals. New NTP rankings won’t be released until after the new year.
