USA Weightlifting Announces the 2023 IWF Weightlifting World Championships Team Roster

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Weightlifting has announced the 20 athletes who will represent Team USA at the 2023 IWF Weightlifting World Championships, September 4-17 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The event will not only feature the world’s best lifters but is also the first mandatory Olympic qualifying competition for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Approximately 900 athletes from across the globe are expected to participate in the critical international event in 20 bodyweight categories.

The U.S. squad features 10 men and 10 women competing with 13 of the American team members returning to world championships action after competing in the 2022 event.

Seven members of the 2020 U.S. Olympic Weightlifting Team will compete in Saudi Arabia as they fight for spots in the 2024 Olympic Games. Three-time Olympian and 2022 World championships silver medalist Sarah Robles (+87kg/Desert Hot Springs, Calif.), 2020 Olympic silver medalist and 2019 World Champion Kate Vibert (71kg/Johns Creek, Ga.), 2020 Olympian and 2019 Pan American Games champion CJ Cummings (89kg/Beaufort, S.C.), 2020 Olympian and 2019 Pan American Games champion Wes Kitts (102kg/Atlanta, Ga.), 2020 Olympian and 2022 World Championships silver medalist Mattie Rogers (81kg/Geneva, Fla.), 2020 Olympian and 2018 Junior World Championships silver medalist Jourdan Delacruz (49kg/Wylie, Texas), and 2020 Olympian and two time Pan American Champion Caine Wilkes (+109kg/Indian Trail, N.C.) will all lift in the 2023 World Championships.

Two returning World Championships medalists are back for more hardware in 2023. Two-time World Championships medalist Olivia Reeves (71kg/Chattanooga, Tenn.) and reigning World Championships bronze medalist Hayley Reichardt (49kg/Leesport, Pa.) are heading to Saudi Arabia. 2021 World Champion Meredith Alwine (71kg/Alamonte Springs, Fla.) will look to duplicate her title at the 2023 World Championships competition.

Three-time Pan American champion Hampton Morris (61kg/Marietta, Ga.), Pan American bronze medalist Taylor Wilkins (59 kg; Sebastian Fla.), Pan American silver medalist Ryan Grimsland (73 kg; Lewisville, N.C.), 2023 Pan American Champion Ryan Sester (102kg/Gresham, Ore.), and Grand Prix I silver medalist Nathan Damron (89kg/Los Gatos, Calif.) will all return to World Championships action in Saudi Arabia as well.

2023 Pan American Champion and Cuba IWF Grand Prix 1 gold medalist Mary Theisen-Lappen (+87 kg/Eau Claire, Wis.), 2017 World Championships team member Brian Reisenauer (61kg/Fargo, N.D.), and 2023 Grand Prix I participants Danielle Gunnin (59kg/Monroe, Ga.), Caden Cahoy (73kg/Jacksonville, Fla.), and 2023 Pan American Champion Alejandro Medina (+109kg/Miami, Fla.) will round out Team USA's roster. 

Prior to departing for Saudi Arabia, the U.S. team will convene in Paris for a preparatory training camp at the French national training center led by Mike Gattone, Senior Director of Sport Performance and Pyrros Dimas, Technical Director.

The competition will begin on September 4 at the Green Hall at Prince Faisal bin Fahd Olympic Complex and the full schedule by body weight category will be released when available.
